The Tropical Apricot fruit plant has many attributes of both parent species. It is also known as Dovyah’s Hybrid or simply Dovyalis. The name “Tropical Apricot” is commonly used in pan-tropical regions where the plant is grown, referring to the fruit’s attractive color and apricot-like flavor. However, it should not be confused with Mamey (Mammea americana L.), which is also sometimes called South American Apricot or Tropical Apricot. The Tropical Apricot is a large shrub or small tree that can grow over 25 feet tall, with a similar spread in width. Its branches are covered with dark green leaves measuring about 2 to 4 inches long and often bear sharp thorns. The drooping branches give the plant a wide, spreading appearance and produce numerous male, female, and perfect flowers. The fruit is thin-skinned, round, and measures about ¾ to 2 inches in diameter. It changes color from green to pale yellow-orange and finally to deep red when fully ripe. Fruits can be harvested at the yellow-orange stage and will continue ripening to red. The soft yellow-orange flesh has a pleasantly sour taste with a distinct apricot-like flavor. Some larger fruits contain 1 to 5 seeds, while most fruits are seedless. Tropical Apricot fruit plants are now available in Kerala.
